“You sound depressed, Kris. Maybe you need a vacation.” Shanna waved. “I’m out for the night. There’s a sushi place by my apartment that just opened up. Later!” She disappeared into the twilight and Kris rolled her eyes.

A vacation? More like an end to all the killing. Movement from the old ruins drew her attention. He was here. Her heart ached in a shadow of pain; memories she’d hoped were buried, threatening to spill over.

She slid her blades back in their sheaths and walked toward him.

The shadows lengthened and she paused, leaning against the crumbling doorway of a roofless room.

“You cut your hair.” His voice. Gods she remembered that voice. Smooth as silk across her senses, but as cold as ice when he was pissed.

“I like it short.” Her heart refused to calm and she closed her eyes. Too late for it now, he could taste the change in her scent. His kind always could.

“It looks good on you.”
“Thanks.”

She felt the shift in the air current right before he appeared behind her, his breath caressing the back of her neck.

“Letting an enemy get so close to your back, Kristiana?” he tsked softly.

Kris inhaled his scent, storing it in her memory for the next fifteen years that he’d be out of her life. “You’re not my enemy today.” Lust uncoiled from her belly with a stretch of fire, licking inside her soul. How long had it been since she’d let down her guard?
