Countdown begins…

Saturday, October 31st, 2009

Three hours and counting until NaNoWriMo’s launch. This year is a little different for me than the years before for several reasons.

  1. My family and I are geographically separated. They’re halfway across the world from me and I’m missing them like crazy. My wonderful husband is doing his best to hold down the fort but we’re all feeling the edge of separation during this holiday season.
  2. With the exception of Kim and Lexxie, my other writing partners are not NaNo-ing this year. There are a ton of ladies at the Romance Divas who ARE in NaNo and that’s encouraging, but the word wars and challenges are going to be fewer and far between. To tell you the truth, I don’t know what I’d do without my two amigas. They really keep me going.
  3. I’m writing two novels. 100K by the 30th of November. Yeah. That’s right. I’m crazy. So this word marathon I’m on…anyone else have the feeling I’ll need a straight jacket when it’s all said and done?

But I’ll make it. I’ll tear that word count up b/c ultimately, the only one stopping me from achieving success is… Me. See you later, wonderful readers, I’ve got to get my write on. :)

7 + days

Saturday, October 24th, 2009

There are now seven days and some-odd hours remaining before NaNoWriMo begins. My days are hectic as I try to get all other projects done before NaNo launch. I’ve got two projects planned for this year’s NaNo. The 50K novel is entitled Feral Intent and is the launch of a brand new series.

For my candy story I have a novella planned. Nothing else about that yet as it’s a multi-author series and I don’t want to say anything that could spill information ahead of time. So what about you? Do you have anything planned yet? Or are you skipping NaNo this year?

Who am I?

Here’s one of those…I can’t believe I have to explain this…kind of posts. Over the past couple of weeks I’ve received half a dozen emails from people thinking I’m a different Dawn Montgomery (and a lovely amount from people looking for the author, Thank you guys!).

There’s a lovely model in Georgia who’s recently been in several magazines and photo shoots. I’m not her. So please stop sending me all the wicked and downright scary things you want to do to this poor woman. I hope she has body guards and an incredible sense of danger. I have no way of getting hold of her, so don’t send me emails that way either.

There’s a Jeri Dawn Montgomery in Houston who accidentally killed someone b/c she was texting while driving. Anyone who knows me knows how I feel about texting while driving. As a matter of fact, I hate phones as a general rule, so it wasn’t me. (Nevermind the fact that I don’t live in Houston and am not serving a prison sentence). So please stop sending me hate mail about irresponsible texting. I assure you, this isn’t me.

The awesome female basketball player. She’s awesome…really. You need to see her play. I did and I was amazed. But nope, not her. I’m only 5 feet tall. :)

So maybe I should tell you a little bit about myself. I’m short, chubby with red hair, blue eyes, and pale skin (and freckles!) that can only come from major sun avoidance. I’m Irish, Scottish, and Shawnee in my heritage which makes me all-American. LOL!

I’m happily married and have some of the best kids in the world…even if they do their best to drive me crazy. I’m scatterbrained and spend my time making people laugh or making them feel comfortable in their own skin. I’ll never be a model or basketball player. To be honest, the only sports I like are solo sports. Hiking, running, walking, weight lifting…I’m picked last in pick up games b/c I am just that bad. ;)

Dawn Montgomery is a penname.

For those of you who wonder why I “hide” behind one, I need only look to the stalker-eque emails for these other Dawns to confirm my instincts. My family is my life and endangering them by allowing unknown people access to my personal information is reckless.

This will be posted up on my “About Me” page under the FAQs.

National Novel Writing Month is coming up soon. My awesome crit partner, Kim Knox, always has this cool thing she does before she starts her NaNo wip…she creates a button or two to keep her motivated.

Her images are fabulous and hilarious. You should definitely check them out on her blog. This year I decided I’d do the same thing…only I’d create an image that captures the heat/imagery I imagine for my NaNo wip.

Tell me what you think. ;)

Frustration

Monday, October 19th, 2009

I am tired of 15 minute upload times for a manuscript and certain places I like to play (gmail, youtube, etc) being blocked. This is getting frustrating. I’m not writing this from work, but from my own computer…with internet I pay for. A friend has shown me how to move around the country-wide firewalls, and I’ll be trying it this weekend. The place is beautiful, but I still have work to do…

Small gripe session. Will have more wonderful things to post tomorrow.

Decadence Excerpt Monday

Monday, October 12th, 2009

excerptmondayOnce a month, a bunch of authors get together and post excerpts from published books, contracted work or works in progress, and link to each other. You don’t have to be published to participate-just a writer with an excerpt you’d like to share.

For more info on how to participate, head over to the Excerpt Monday site! or click on the banner above.

Decadence was so much fun to write. When Marteeka Karland came up with the Sex and Chocolate series I asked myself…what would be the worst thing that would happen to a chocoholic? The answer? Make her deathly allergic to it. Since I couldn’t have my heroine really dying in the first couple of chapters, I decided to make her (mostly) immortal. So Vampire Rachel was given life…er…unlife? The Kitchen Witch Society was created shortly thereafter.

All content is © Dawn Montgomery. This is an adult excerpt, rated NC-17.

DECADENCE is available now at Changeling Press.

“You don’t want our assistance?”

“Not if it means being stuck with you.” A lie. From my heart to my lips, a complete lie. This close I could taste the rush of blood under his skin and the flavor of his sweat. The pounding of his heart tugged at the beast enough to make my pussy slicken with desire. Yes, I was lying through my pearly white fangs about not wanting to be stuck with Ryan.

“You don’t like me?”

I laughed at the outraged expression on his face. This one’s ego was too much. “Don’t take it so hard, baby.” I lowered my lashes and touched my tongue to my teeth.

His gaze followed my movement. I heard his heart kick up a notch or two. Was it fear? I was never very good at reading adrenal responses, so I had no idea.

“I never play with my food.” I had the satisfaction of watching Ryan turn that thought over in his mind. The insistent throbbing of my feet took all the fun out of my play so I sighed and waved toward the couch. “Make yourself at home. I need to change since I just got off work.”

“Work?”

I tugged at the clip holding my hair up. My hair tumbled free and I groaned in relief at the pleasure/pain on my scalp. “Yeah. Work. You know, what most people do in their lives.”

“You’re a vampire.” He was following me. Why did that kick my heartbeat up a notch or two?

“Yes. Vampire, not zombie. We covered that already.” I turned in the doorway to my bedroom and held up my arm up to block him following. “I work third shift. Please, for the love of all that is holy, let me change clothes before you kill me. I need my work clothes.”

Ryan’s gaze shifted to something darker. “I won’t kill you, Rachel.”

My lip lifted in a slight smile. “If you’re here to help me eat chocolate, you will.”

“What do you mean by that?” He looked genuinely perplexed.

“Didn’t they tell you? My allergy is fatal. My heart stops beating, my body stops working, and it’s as though I were a corpse.”

He tilted his head and a spark of that earlier arrogance chased itself across his face. “I can help you.”

“No offense, baby, but I think this job may just be out of your league.”

The un-life sucks when you’re the only female vampire in the world allergic to chocolate.

When a wizard with a penchant for kitchen magic comes to town, however, things take a delicious and sinful turn. Especially when he puts himself on the menu.

Chocolate goes well with… everything.
