Shadowlight, a review

You guys know I rarely do reviews. There are many reasons, most of them deal with how difficult it is to break down exactly what it was about a book I liked, loved, or hated. There are those books, however, that stand out and take my attention like nothing else. Shadowlight is one of those books. Lynn Viehl does it again.

She was kind enough to provide an ARC of Shadowlight for me to read. And before we begin…if I didn’t like the book, I’d return the ARC and not review it on my blog. So with that out of the way…

I was immediately sucked into the story and transported to the humid beauty of Georgia. She has a way with words and description that make you feel as though you’re breathing the same air and living the adventure.

This is the first book in a new series that involve the Kyn. You don’t have to read the previous Darkyn series to understand what’s going on. So trust me, this is definitely a great start to the world.

There may be a few moments that leaves the reader scratching their head, but it made me curious to move on to the next book…

I don’t want to give spoilers so I’m just going to say this… It takes a helluva writer to make me fall in love with a hero and heroine from the very beginning. Shadowlight does that in spades. From a realistic heroine stuck in hell, to a hero with an incredible story of his own, and finally a villain you love to hate… Shadowlight was one wild ride that never let up.

Shadowlight by Lynn Viehl

With a single touch, Jessa Bellamy can see anyone’s darkest secrets. She’s tried to hide her psychic ability from everyone, but a biotech company called GenHance has discovered her talent, and intends to take her, kill her and harvest her priceless DNA to sell it to the highest bidder.

A mysterious photographer named Gaven Matthias is also interested in Jessa; he’s been trying to find her for months. When GenHance makes their move, Gaven has no choice but to kidnap Jessa himself so he can protect her and convince her to join him in helping protect others like her.

Jessa discovers that she can’t see any of Gaven’s secrets, so she doesn’t know if he’s telling the truth, but as a monstrous assassin created by GenHance’s experiments closes in on them, she must decide if the strong attraction they share is proof enough that Gaven is her greatest ally — or is a smokescreen hiding a terrible secret.

Written for Tariana, stay strong girl.

Prairie dogs may be low on the food chain, but Riley Cates is anything but. More man than dawg, he’s finally carved his place in Barkus. Until Tara walks back into his life. Now there’s no turning back, because once Riley has his taste, he’ll never be able to let her go.

Tara’s drawn to the one man who holds her soul, her happiness in his paws. And no matter what happens, this time, she’s playing for keeps.

Note: While this is a multi-author series, the title is standalone.

The concept of Dawg Town wasn’t my own but I jumped at the chance to write an unconventional shifter. I’m a firm believer in balance. :) The ladies and gents at Changeling were awesome (as always) to work with. I hope you’ll check out more of this series HERE.

Excerpt Monday: Dare Me

Sunday, September 13th, 2009

Once a month, a bunch of authors get together and post excerpts from published books, contracted work or works in progress, and link to each other. You don’t have to be published to participate-just a writer with an excerpt you’d like to share.

For more info on how to participate, head over to the Excerpt Monday site! or click on the banner above.

Dare me is a contemporary erotic romance. I know, contemporary? Me? Truthfully, I’ve been writing them for a very long time, but this work in progress made me sit up and pay attention. You can never go back. Time won’t heal all wounds. But sometimes, when two people are apart, their return to each other can be a passionate explosion.

All content is © Dawn Montgomery. This is an adult excerpt, rated NC-17.

Prologue
Summer, 1999

The earth rich scent of coming rain filled her senses. Megan Coleman dug her fingernails into her palms. Why was she here? The first drops fell, warm and hard against her face and she closed her eyes. This was stupid. She didn’t belong here.

“You came.” Tyler Rhoades’ voice slid over her skin like a caress. Her dreams had been filled with his throaty timbre and wicked commands since she’d first hit puberty.

She opened her eyes. Tyler lounged comfortably against an oak, arms crossed and a one ankle over the other. His midnight hair pulled back in a ponytail. No man ever looked sexier in jeans and a t-shirt. He exuded a confidence she ached to possess. All long lean muscle and strength. He was the center of her every fantasy.

Megan put her hands on her hips. “You invited me.”

Sensual lips twitched. “When do you leave?”

She tilted her head. “Tomorrow.” She wouldn’t ask him how he knew. Windall Falls couldn’t keep a secret if it tried.

Some dark emotion crossed his expression and then disappeared behind a slow smile.  Her stomach tightened and a deep ache in her core began throbbing in time with her heartbeat.

It had to be insanity possessing her. Tyler Rhoades was way out of her league. Too experienced, too hot. She swallowed and took a shaky breath. She felt his eyes on her, the heated gaze measuring, testing. His lips turned to a sneer and her veins turned to ice.

“Are we slumming now, Megan? Jocks no longer good enough for your sweet pussy?”

Megan burned with something dark and furious. She ignored the way her body responded to his wicked words and focused on her anger instead. “Fuck you.” Those fucking rumors. She turned on her heel. Rain pelted against her body, cooling the heat infusing her cheeks. Bastard. She didn’t need this. Hadn’t she learned by now? Lightning chained across the thunderheads. A hard storm was coming. She needed to finish packing anyway.

He snagged her wrist and latched on to her belt loop in a move that had her spinning into his arms. Her palms smacked against his chest and fisted in the loose cotton shirt. Thunder rumbled quietly in the distance. “If I didn’t know any better, I’d say you were angry with me, little one.” His breath caressed her cheek.

Shivers of anticipation slid down her spine. The evidence of his arousal pressed between them, a brand against Megan’s stomach. “Why ever would you think that? I suppose being called a slut isn’t an insult anymore?”

He chuckled and pressed a kiss against her cheek. She jerked away from his tender touch. “Why are you here?”

Fear and lust warred within her body. “Don’t play games with me, Tyler.” She rested her forehead against his shoulder. “Not you. Not now. This doesn’t have to be complicated.”

His hands caressed down her back, smoothing the wet material against her skin. Her breath came in a small gasp. The material was so cold.  He ran his hand around her hip and cupped her pussy through wet jeans. Heat speared her from the inside and she moaned. Lightning slid across the sky and she let her head tilt to the side.

“Everything’s complicated with you.” She couldn’t respond because his lips did wicked things to her throat, tasting, nipping, and kissing, all the while his fingers caressed her through her jeans, hard and slow. Heat sizzled along her nerve endings until she couldn’t catch her breath.

“I can feel the heat coming off your pussy. Are you wet for me, Megan?”

Megan bit her lip, afraid to speak. His eyes were heated with an inner fire, a lust so dark she was terrified. It couldn’t be excitement rolling in her belly, could it? “You wish.”

The darkness grew in his gaze, more intense, riding him like a thunderstorm. “That was the wrong answer, baby.”

A question of timing

Monday, September 7th, 2009

Today a tweet caught my eye. Alison Kent posted a question about whether or not you were overindulging in social networking. In a guest blog post at Sia McKye’s Thoughts Over Coffee (a blog you should check out over your cuppa joe in the morning) she talked about the effects of social networking and information overload on your writing capacity. When is too much, too much?

Since I’ve moved here for my day job, I’ve felt isolated. Even more than I’d ever imagined. The internet has become my way to talk to people. My connection with my family, my home, my friends. The relationships with my writing partners haven’t changed. We just see each other more (or less) often depending on where they currently reside.

The emails I get from fans I try to reply to in as little as 24 hours. My editors and publishing houses have all communicated to me through email so there is no change in the way I’m doing business there.

No. What’s happened is that I’ve become obsessed with blog hopping, twitter feeds, and facebook applications LOL. I’ve let them carve little patches in my writing time until all I have left is minutes a day to get my words down on paper. With the deadlines I’ve set for myself, that’s not acceptable.

So, I’m now refocusing my time. I’ll post what I’m up to and when, still give you news and come to chats. I love dropping in on them anyway, it makes for spontaneously good time!

So bear with me as I rework my balance. :)

I’ve been out of the loop for a while, but I’m finally settled in to my new job halfway across the world from my family. The job has been a smooth transition so far but I miss the ethics of American business. In some countries, laws are put in place so that others can put their hands in the cookie jar, in others, laws are put in place to protect all parties involved. And that’s all I’m going to say about that!

Instead, I’d like to let you guys know some great news! I have a list of books coming soon. Most of them before the end of the year. YAY!
